Banarjee bags inter-college chess title

Sumit Banerjee of host Madhusudan Law College emerged champion, scoring six points from seven rounds in the Utkal University Inter-College Chess Tournament at M S Law College here today. Rajat Kumar Sahoo of SCS College, Puri, finished runner-up also with six points.

Mahesh Prasad Sethi (PG, Vani Vihar), Johnson Sahu (PN College, Khurda) and Jitu Samantaray (Godabarish College, Banapur) occupied the third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.

The top five finishers qualified to represent Utkal in the Central Zone Inter-University Chess Tournament to be held at Awdhesh Pratap Singh University, Rewa (MP) from next month.

Earlier yesterday, PG Vani Vihar achieved a hat-trick by winning the team title for the third time on the trot with 10.5 points. MS Law College (9) and SCS College (8) finished second and third respectively.

Shailabala Women`s College bagged the title in the women`s tournament, which was conducted for the first time. Imarti Devi Women`s College (9.5) and Indira Gandhi Women`s College (8) secured the second and third positions respectively.

Utkal University Sports Council director Prof Jayant Kumar Parida handed over the trophies in the presence of MS Law College Principal Prof Ashok Kumar Srivastav.
